Business : When the Right Time Comes

“What do you do when the phone rings?” A question I am often asked. My answer is that when I sit at my desk, unless I am in the middle of a conversation, I answer it.

I found out a lot about people’s “phone answering” habits.

The past few months have been fun. I started a campaign to call 1,000 people (everyone on my email subscription list with their phone number). My goal was to pass an email and actually talk to people, to get to know them. I have made many calls.

Here are some of the lessons I learned as I called:

1. We never leave home without using our phone for fear of being found out, yet very few people answer the phone when it rings and return a few text messages.

2. Everyone I have talked to has enjoyed the opportunity to talk to a business coach who has had a successful business over the past decade. I have given people ideas for their business (and sometimes the opportunity to work with me). Everyone I spoke to thanked me for my time and no one said, “I don’t want to talk to you.” In addition a few people told me that my goal was to encourage them to pick up the phone and connect more with people.

3. Successful business owners answer their phone. My email subscription list has thousands of people on it. Some have successful businesses, others do not. What amazes me the most is that those with successful businesses put their phone numbers on their website and hold their own phone when it rings. They are not too busy doing other things when opportunities arise.

Important: When the phone rings it is an opportunity to connect. I know there are times when you can really pick up the phone at that moment, you may be in the middle of something, and it is not a good time to talk, but I have found that people the opportunity to connect is those whose business is growing. They take advantage of opportunities when they have them.

Receiving a call from anyone is a communication opportunity. You never know what someone on the other side of the phone should be with you. Sometimes it goes with what you do or need, sometimes it doesn’t match.

Having made these calls I will admit that it bothers me to leave messages but the conversations I have had, when the call is answered, have been good opportunities for me to get to know some great businessmen.
