The world’s oldest person, Brazilian nun Ina Canberra Lucas, has died at the age of 116, her family confirmed on April 30 in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
She was born on May 27, 1908, and was ordained a nun at the age of 19 in the Brazilian community of Terences, based in Porto Alegre.
When asked in an interview why she lived so long, Ina said it was because she prayed to God every day for people around the world.
She was the daughter of Brazilian revolutionary leader General David Canberra. During her more than a century of life, Ina witnessed many world events. She lived through two world wars and saw 10 popes.
The nun is a football fan and supports Brazilian club Internacional, a club that is a year younger than her.
After the death of the nun, the oldest person in the world is now Ethel Caterham, an Englishwoman. Caterham was born on August 21, 1909, and is now 115 years old.
